As I’m sure you’ve heard, the 5^th Annual FEST-OF-ALL Gala & Fashion Show is coming up Saturday, February 25^th at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. And you know what that means… great music and tons of dancing!

The Real Geniuses are back by popular demand, and will be performing live throughout the evening. Their eclectic set list, and slight 80’s focus, is always a huge hit. The Real Geniuses play everything from The Beatles and Tom Petty to Madonna and ABBA, so you’re sure to recognize a few. This is a night to have fun with friends, so feel free to let lose, sing, and dance... I know I will be!

FEST-OF-ALL Runway Fashion Show!!!

It’s only the party everyone is talking about… the 5^th Annual FEST-OF-ALL Gala & Fashion Show. Held at the classy Baltimore Museum of Industry on Saturday, February 25^th, this is a night you won’t want to miss.

Launch Party for Locally Written Federal Hill Book!

In the winter of 2007, William Clark and wife, Maria Sosa, moved into one of Federal Hill’s many historic row houses. Struck by the beauty and history of Federal Hill, the couple sought to bring the story of this vital neighborhood to life. And that’s just what they did in their new book, Federal Hill, which became part of the Images of America series. Over 200 vintage images and stories line the pages of this book, recounting memories of days gone by in this historic Baltimore community. Federal Hill is lucky to have residents that are so passionate about, and interested in, the neighborhood.

Come join the authors at the book’s launch party! Hosted by Federal Hill main Street, at Mother’s Federal Hill Grille, Thursday, February 16^th @ 7 p.m.

This Sunday: Apothecary Wellness Open House in Federal Hill

Apothecary Wellness is having an open house this Sunday, January 29^th. Join them from 12-4 p.m. and learn how to become a more Vibrant You. It will be an afternoon of wellness, beauty, education, and relaxation.

All are welcome to come and meet the talented and friendly staff and learn about their services, which include Holistic Health Coaching, Acupuncture, and Naturopathy (to name a few!). They will be conducting all day demonstrations on stretching and self-care, mineral make-up, and organic and holistic skin care. Chair massages and softening thermal hand treatments will be available for a small donation. In addition, they will be raffling a Gift of Wellness certificate and skin care prizes.

All donations will go to BARCS Animal Rescue and Recycled Love Shelter.

Federal Hill South's Chili Cook-Off!!!

Don’t miss Federal Hill South’s Chili Cook-Off, happening this Sunday! The event will take place at the Catholic Community School from 4 to 7 p.m.

Come out and try tons of different chili recipes prepared by your friends and neighbors in Federal Hill. Tickets are only $5, and you will receive chili (of course!), chips, salsa, and soft drinks.

Or take part in the action and become a participant in the cook-off. Contestants must purchase a ticket and bring enough chili for 20 people, serving utensils, and the recipe.

Even if you’re not a chili-lover this event will still be a blast with Hanover Blues Band playing live! This will definitely be an exciting afternoon full of fun, food, and live music!

New To Federal Hill: Grilled Cheese & Co.

The newest addition to the Federal Hill restaurant scene is Grilled Cheese & Co. , 1036 Light Street, founded by Victor Corbi and Matt Lancelotta with partners James Lancelotta and Scott Pevenstein, a resident of Federal Hill. Scott said, “The new location of the business is working well; we always have a very pleasant dinner crowd.”

Some of the sandwich favorites on the menu are the Veggie Delight, the Crabby Melt, and the BCT (bacon, cheese & tomato). The bread comes from the Cardinal Bakery in Sterling, Virginia, and is a big hit among customers. Don’t miss out on James' delicious Tomato Soup, his own special recipe. The menu also offers salads and a kids’ meal. There is a comfortable and pleasant seating area, or you can get take-out.

Grilled Cheese & Co. is open 11 am to 9 pm Sunday through Wednesday and 11 am to 2:30 am Thursday through Saturday.

Urbanite Profiles Federal Hill Artist

Jessica Damen, a renowned artist and Federal Hill resident, was featured this week in the Urbanite Arts/Culture e-zine. Jessica is a full-time painter of oil paintings and Chinese-inspired ink brush paintings, and she is a part-time portrait artist, painter of notecards, and a teacher of art. Currently, she is exhibiting new work in a show entitled "Altered Truths Fractured Myths" at the City Arts Gallery through January 9.

In a piece entitled "Q&A with Jessica Damen, A Baltimore artist shares her love for artichokes, Federal Hill, and vintage hats," Jessica discusses her art, her life, and her love for our "very walkable" neighborhood and its "esprit de corps." She named many of the local businesses she supports (Phina's for the Home, Matsuri, Regi's American Bistro, Thai Arroy, to name a few) and even gave a shout-out to Historic Federal Hill Main Street for helping to generate "this common spirit" with festivals and other activities to beautify and encourage this cohesive and vibrant neighborhood."

Jessica received her MFA from MICA'S Hoffberger School of Painting in 2001 and has received many fellowships, grants, and awards since. Read the full article:

Local B & B Featured in Wall Street Journal

Federal Hill’s favorite bed & breakfast establishment and its popular owners were featured in the Wall Street Journal on November 14. Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast (801 S. Charles) co-owner Barry Werner described the experiences that he and partner Jeff Finlay have had since purchasing the business in 2007.

The charming property has six bedrooms and six baths, and the owners' living quarters. Scarborough Fair is known for its fantastic breakfasts and Festive Flavors spreads. It has won several awards and is the #1 rated B&B in the city and state on TripAdvisor.com

Try Sunday Gravy at Spoons!

If you haven't tried Spoons (24 E. Cross St) for dinner yet, now is a good time to check it out. In November, Spoons is serving “Sunday Gravy” from 4 to 7 pm. Co-owner Deb Cogan explains, “It is an Italian family-style meal that is usually served on Sunday afternoons or evenings when the whole family would get together.”

The gravy (sauce or ragu) is not your typical spaghetti sauce. It is cooked for over four hours and then enriched with a variety of cooked meats: links of Italian sausage, meatballs, and baby back ribs. Spoons' Sunday Gravy includes antipasto salad, pasta plus meat, and dessert. Price is $19 for adults and $5 for kids under the age of 12. Italian wines are also available. “Sunday evenings will be for gravy only, so no other food items will be available,” explained Deb.

Pink October at MaGerk's Pub

MaGerk's Pub (1061 S. Charles Street) is working with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness month through a variety of means.

Some bartenders are donating 10% of tips to the Race for the Cure on certain shifts, MaGerk's will match this amount. You can tell which shifts are involved by reading the back of your bartenders shirt. If you donate $5 to the Race for the Cure, you receive a wristband that entitles you to drink specials that day. And, proceeds from sales of certain specialty drinks will be donated to the fund by Red Bull.

Now Open: Republic Noodle!

Republic Noodle (1121 Light Street) is Federal Hill’s newest B.Y.O.B. noodle bar and pan-Asian restaurant with an emphasis on “all-natural, hormone & antibiotic free meats and poultry combined with eco-friendly, sustainable, organic, and local products.” Owners, Christopher Boylan and David Lynch live in the community and opened the restaurant a month ago.

Some favorites are the Maryland Blue Crab Egg Rolls, Wasabi Organic Deviled Eggs, Big Eye Tuna Tartare Duo with Wonton Chips, Chili Braised To-Fu Salad, any of the Broth Noodles, and the Vietnamese Pho. By Popular Demand: Spoons Open for Dinner!

Spoons (24 E. Cross St), a favorite for breakfast and lunch, is now serving dinner also. Everyone has been asking the owner of this great, green Federal Hill establishment to serve up its fabulous food for dinner, and we got our wish!

Spoons is starting out slowly, adding equipment in stages and was closed last week to make some renovations to the dining room. Deb Cogan, co-owner, says dinner will be offered Wednesday-Saturday and hours will be extended on Sunday to 5 p.m.

The chef they have brought in is, Chef Paul Santi, is a familiar name to many. Formerly, he was part of Champagne Tony's on Light Street. "He is doing a great job keeping morning and afternoon menus cohesive with dinner," said Deb. "We want to keep it comfortable, casual, and delicious. Our goal is to create a place people will enjoy."

SoBoKids Promotes Community Service

SoBoKids is a new family-oriented nonprofit community service organization founded by Andrea Sommer, a long-time South Baltimore resident. Its mission is "to create neighborhood pride and a sense of community by bringing families together to serve the city of Baltimore," Andrea explained.

Andrea started SoBoKids because she wanted her children to grow up with a sense of obligation to the world around them. She enjoyed participating in school-sponsored family service projects and decided to build on that experience. Several other South Baltimore families who share Andrea's sense of commitment to the community have joined SoBoKids. Families can participate in projects that interest them and are age appropriate.

"Federal Hill Main Street has been a great source of information and provided the first project for the group," said Andrea. Nine SoBoKids families helped plant 10 new large planters on South Charles Street. Funded by Baltimore Grand Prix beautification grant, the project helped spruce up the street and gave families a chance to work together on a fun activity.

Fox 45 Morning News featured Sunday’s Street Beat Festival as its “Hometown Hotspot” today. Four spots aired live from Federal Hill Main Street and highlighted different aspect of the big event, including live music, arts&crafts, food&drink, children’s activities, and more.

Alexa Webb of Alexandra Webb Artisan Jewelry talked on air and showed some of her stunning original jewelry that will be available at her booth, in front of her shop at 1028 S. Charles Street, in the heart of the festival area. Also featured were framed originals by Federal Hill photographer Gail Goldner Green. They are two of the 70+ vendors offering a wide range of items this Sunday, such as scarves, purses, artwork, crafts, beauty products, home goods, clothing, and more. The food & drink offerings include something for everyone.

Storefront "Facelifts" in Federal Hill

The “Open for Business” campaign is underway! The Federal Hill Business Association and Federal Hill Main Street are working together to improve the appearance of our business district to make it more appealing for residents, visitors, and potential business owners.

Volunteers from Main Street and the Business Association are focusing on the most visible storefronts first by sprucing up vacant properties with colored paper, attractive posters, and colorful maps (see photo), in effect turning them into information kiosks until a new business moves in. “We want our shop windows to look chic and inviting,” explained Committee Chair Will Runnebaum.

Artist Crystal Moll, whose gallery is at 1030 S. Charles, and Interior Designer Katie Destefano, whose shop is at 1033 S. Charles, are contributing their talents to the cause. Crystal designed the attractive "Historic Federal Hill" poster, and Katie is donating her talents to help business owners "stage" their windows to catch the eye of passers-by.

You don't have to be part of the committee to join in the effort! Like Will says, “Let's all do our part...pull those weeds, sweep your sidewalk, wash your windows and let's show our visitors the beautiful community where we live and work!”

Getting Around during the Grand Prix

Just 9 days until the Baltimore Grand Prix hits our downtown streets! The big races are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 2-4. Some of us still need to get around during the weekend (and we don't all have Indi 500 cars to get us there), so follow these simple directions:

Plan ahead!
Consider walking, public transportation when feasible.
For driving instructions throughout the area, go to www.gptraffic.com. Put in your starting point and your destination. The Web site will give you detailed instructions on the route.
The Purple Line of the Charm City Circulator has a modified route. The southern end serving Federal Hill will go down Light (starting at Montgomery), to Ostend, to the M&T parking lot area, back up West to Charles to Montgomery. The northern route will travel between City Center and Penn Station. There will be no Inner Harbor stops, so you’ll have to walk past the race course to catch a bus north.
Stadium event parking restrictions are in effect.

The Grand Prix is bringing lots of attention to our city. There will be closures and some delays during the weekend, but if you plan ahead and use the Web site, getting around downtown Baltimore shouldn’t be too difficult.

Sprucing up Federal Hill Business District

Federal Hill Main Street is using a $6,000 beautification grant from the Baltimore Grand Prix to spruce up our business district. Take a walk around and check out the beautiful new large planters on Charles Street, filled with colorful flowers. You will also see some new posters and maps in storefront windows.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and City Councilor Bill Cole came to South Baltimore yesterday (corner of Cross and Race Streets) for the ceremonial award of a $100,000 dollar check from the Grand Prix to the communities of Baltimore. Betty Bland-Thomas of Sharp-Leadenhall accepted the check.

Everyone can do their part in making Federal Hill beautiful – all year round! Respect the plants and flowers and pick up trash.

Artful Furniture Restoration in Federal Hill

David Reiff of Federal Hill Restorations and Antiques, 912 S. Charles, spends hours each day working on forgotten pieces of furniture. He and his apprentice, Ryan, restore antiques to bring out their original beauty. The business has been operating out of the Klein’s Antique’s space on Charles Street for a year now, and David says, “It's been great.”

David usually has 6 to 8 projects going on at one time, ranging from chairs to cabinets to couches, even a 1780’s corner cupboard, and much more. He finds unique and interesting pieces to work on at auctions across the state. All the work is done by hand, with each piece getting lots of attention. David and Ryan are the only restorers, and they are both dedicated to ensuring that the antiques stay true to their original time period, no matter how long it takes. They've been working on one piece since March!

From a young age, David has had an interest in antiques. He even taught himself how to restore them. Now he has his work all over the east coast and even has one piece in the White House (a painting for which he restored the frame). David and Ryan also do occasional finishing work on pieces for their neighbor, Artesanos don Bosco, a furniture store and gallery at 828 S. Charles.

Restoration truly is an art, and David has dedicated his life to it. Stop by Klein’s Antiques and see the beautiful work that he does.

Catch an Original: “This Is Baltimore! ”

Mark Cottman, owner and artist of Mark Cottman Gallery, 1014 S. Charles, will be unveiling “This is Baltimore!” tonight at 6 pm. This painting has always been a dream of Mark’s, and now it is finished! The acrylic work highlights 26 famous Baltimore landmarks and really captures what it means to be a Baltimorean. A native of Baltimore, Mark wanted to do a painting to celebrate the city and show how proud he is to be from here. The goal, he says, is to give someone the “feeling of Baltimore.” This colorful and dynamic painting is truly one of a kind! Copper Kitchen has arrived in Federal Hill

Copper Kitchen, led by executive chef and owner Kevin Miller, has opened its doors at 1016 S. Charles Street. An honors graduate of Baltimore's own Culinary Arts School, Kevin has been cooking all his life. He traveled the world as an executive chef aboard Amway's Private Yacht Enterprise V, where he learned cuisines of many cultures. Additionally he co-opened Ixia, a Baltimore restaurant, in 2001 where he continued to work until 2008. Then in 2009 he became the executive chef of Widespread Concierge Service.

Five months ago, Kevin opened Copper Kitchen as a full service caterer, perfect for any party or event. U2: More Than Just a Concert for Federal Hill

Last week’s U2 concert was a great economic boost for Federal Hill, says Light Street Cycles (1124 Light Street) owner Penny Troutner. Not only did it attract 80,000 festive fans to the area, it also brought hundreds in to work for several days on production, stage assembly, etc., before and after the huge event. And where did these workers go when they were done? To Federal Hill, of course!

Penny befriended a group of truckers who worked on the stage. They came into her store, bought bikes, had bike repairs done, and were incredibly friendly. So friendly that they gave her back stage passes to the concert! (See photo.)

And, Light Street Cycles was not the only local business to benefit. Production crew members were spotted at many establishments, including Afters Café (1001 S. Charles), Mother’s (1113 S. Charles), The Abbey Burger Bistro (1041 Marshall), and Pub Dog (20 E. Cross)! Thousands of U2 fans flocked to all the local restaurants and pubs before and after the show, too. “We were slammed and it was great fun,” said Tony of The Hill (1015 S. Charles).

Illusions’ Act Heads for the High Seas

Federal Hill’s own Spencer Horsman (pictured here), star of Illusions Magic Bar & Lounge, 1029 S. Charles, is working his second cruise this month, leaving out of Vancouver and cruising around Alaska for the next two weeks.

But, don't worry, Illusions lovers, Spencer’s friend Jerry Rowan, a comedic juggler, is filling in. He will be performing shows at 9 pm on Saturday June 18and 25, so come out and have some fun! Let's hope Spencer has a great time on the road, and check out his act at Illusions when he returns next month.

ZipCar Adds More Vehicles!

Introducing... Kids' Kross Street!

Kids’ Kross Street (previously Little One’s Lane) will make its debut at this year’s Jazz&Blues Wine&Art Festival on June 5. The area has a broader focus designed to make the area attractive to older children, while still making the little ones happy.

The popular moon bounces, face painting and toddler play area will still be there, but new activities will be added to satisfy the older children. “We’ve created a ‘tween’ area with bag toss and ladder ball games, and we want to add craft stations and other entertainment,” explained Wendy Simmons, parent volunteer.

Following a contest at last September’s Street Beat Festival, Kids’ Kross Street was selected as the new name. The winning entry was submitted by Federal Hill South resident Deniene Davis and daughter Grace.

Federal Hill Fight Fest: May 14

Baltimore Boxing presents FED HILL FIGHT FEST on Saturday, May 14^th 2:30 to 8:00 pm, in the M&T Bank Stadium parking lot. The event features food vendors, music by DJ Ramon, cash bar, prizes, and more. There will be 8-12 Olympic-style boxing matches with local fighters including Derek Blazer (Mad River Grill). Patrick Celtic Tiger Conelius will fight for the Maryland State Heavyweight Senior Division title with Federal Hill Fitness’ Donavon by his side as trainer and corner man.

Looking for a way to raise money for your favorite cause? MaGerks is here to help. You bring the people, they provide a venue and staff. The fundraising night is tailored to fit each individual cause to maximize profit and fun.

Each organization can set a cover charge, which is pure profit to the organization and has the option of selling raffle tickets, holding an auction or other forms of fundraising. “This can be extremely profitable to the organization,” said Sarah Clark of MaGerks. Through the FUN-draising Fridays at MaGerks, they are hoping to show that the bars in Federal Hill do some good for the community.

MaGerks will reserve the upper level for the group and will donate a keg of beer, a platter of food or 10 percent of sales from the party. Each party will also enjoy drink specials and inexpensive food, on a night that many people are already out. The organization also has the choice of making the party private or opening it to the public.

“It’s always good to give back and it’s always been very important to me,” said Clark. “It’s exciting its actually happening.” The program has very recently begun and has already been extremely successful. MaGerks is happy to help with any organization’s needs and wishes for each to have a successful fundraising night.

Federal Hill Featured in Two Magazines

This is no April Fools joke- Federal Hill has been showcased in two magazines, Washingtonian and Baltimore Magazine!

Federal Hill was one of only three neighborhoods featured in a “Best of Baltimore” article in the April edition of Washingtonian and the title of the article, “Good Views, Good Fun”, seems to fit Federal Hill very well.

The article showcased Whimsy, Curiosity and Artesanos Don Boscos, all on S. Charles, a must-go for shopping in Federal Hill and Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast as a place to stay and enjoy great food. As for recommended nightlife, Washingtonian provided a place for everyone, from the “popped-collar, frat boy” to the music lover: Ropewalk Tavern, Mad River Bar & Grille, Nick’s Seafood Inner Harbor in Cross Street Market, and 8X10 Club.

The article in Baltimore Magazine’s “neighborhood issue”, written by AMY Grace, former board President and current ex officio member, explains why she loves Federal Hill. When she moved here in 1996, the business district was struggling and community resources were scarce. After many changes, AMY now names Federal Hill, “Baltimore’s ‘historically hip’ place to call home.” The Insiders’Tips sidebar lists Dangerously Delicious Pies, SoBo Café, The Book Escape, Illusions Bar & Lounge, Cross Street Market and Ryleigh’s Oyster as musts.

Update on 1111 Light St. Project

Demolition of the former Epstein’s Department store is complete, allowing construction to begin this month on the $30 million mixed use project. The Light Street side of the building will be the first to be constructed and should be completed this fall, said project developer Arsh Mirmiran. The residential components, including 93 luxury one- and two-bedroom apartments, on Weber, William, and Cross Streets are expected to be ready in early spring of 2012.

The sidewalk closed on Light Street should reopen by late summer or early fall, when the new building is in place, said Mirmiran. The sidewalks on Weber Street and the south side of William Street, directly in front of the construction, will remain closed for the duration of the construction.

According to Mirmiran, M&T Bank has signed a lease for the prime ground floor retail space and interest has been expressed in the remaining floor retail space, as well as the 22,000 office space on the 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th floors.

Federal Hill's New Novelty Haus

Enter Novelty Haus, and enter a world of fun! Owner Noel Conrad felt there was a lack of stores with merchandise of pure fun and opened the Novelty Haus shop on March 5^thin the back of Dangerously Delicious Pies at 1036 Light Street.

Noel had formed an art house in 2009, in collaboration with several other artists, making screen printed posters and t-shirts, but decided to have a shop of his own. “It has always been a dream of mine to operate a space where people, regardless of backgrounds, can come together to enjoy the pure aspects of life,” said Conrad.

On the shelves you’ll find an eclectic assortment, including toys, buttons, books, apparel, charms, jewelry, records, and turntables. The shop also serves as a satellite location of Atomic Books in Hampden. Don’t worry, though, you can still get some of your favorite delicious pie before or after browsing to enjoy there or take home.

Noel is all about the pursuit of fun and wants others to be able to experience it as well. “Novelty Haus strives to increase the awesomeness of everyday life through locally made and rare international items,” said Conrad.

Novelty Haus is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11am to 9pm and a grand opening is planned for next month. Stop in, grab an “I Love Fed Hill” button, and have some fun!

Main Street to Launch Local Microloan Program

In an effort to help small business owners continue or improve their operations, Federal Hill Main Street is creating a small business revolving loan fund. The fund will offer small businesses microloans from $500 to $2500, with low interest rates for short terms and for specific purposes.

“A vibrant commercial district is key to the health of the Federal Hill Community, and we’re committed to helping local businesses not just survive, but thrive”, said Mike Schollaert, chair of Federal Hill Main Street Business Development Committee.

The program will start small with a few loans to help the businesses with very targeted needs. Federal Hill Main Street has already set aside $5000 in seed money for the program and will seek additional contributions in the form of grants and donations. Just last month, Maryland Capital Enterprises announced that it would soon be expanding into the Baltimore Area to lend up to $10,000 to small businesses. MCE has asked Federal Hill Main Street to serve as a partner and named FHMS Executive Director, Jane Seebold, a member of its Advisory Loan Board.

Fashion, Food and Fun with Fox 45

On Wednesday morning, Fox 45 Hometown Hot Spot reporter, Emily Gracey, joined Fest-of-All Fashion Show coordinator Jessica Atkins (center) and model Katie Destefano (left) to give a preview of what will be on the runway this Saturday night.

The TV crew did four live spots from Jessica's shop, Couture Closet, at 1003 Light Street. In addition to Katie (owner of Curiosity at 1033 S. Charles, above Whimsy), Barry Werner of Scarborough Fair Bed & Breakfast discussed the fine food that will be at Fest-of-All and members of the Baltimore Salsa Company performed a hot Latin dance.

The live broadcasts provided viewers with a preview of the fashion, food, entertainment, and fun that Fest-of-All has to offer. Don’t worry, if you missed the segments, visit the event website for more information!

Spring Forward: Fest-of-All Fashion Show

Fest-of-All is quickly approaching, and the Fashion Show will leave you excited for warm spring days and new clothes. Amy's Boutique, Babe.(a boutique), Couture Closet, Seleh's De Federal Hill and Whimsy will display spring looks from their collection of fabulous clothing on the Fest-of-All runway. Complete with models, beautiful clothing and accessories, the Fashion Show is a must-see.

Coordinator Jessica Atkins of Couture Closet, with help from Lisa Ponzoli of Babe and other participating boutique owners, is planning a great show -- no one will be disappointed!

No fashion show is complete without accessories and beautiful hair styles and make-up for the models. Pandora's Box, Vanessa's Vintage Treasures, and Zelda Zen will be providing the perfect accessories for the apparel on display. M Salon is giving the models great hair and make-up, along with make-up artist Julia Schwemmer.

Dance the Night Away at Fest-of-All!

The entertainment at Fest-of-All will surely get you on to the dance floor. With popular cover band, The Real Geniuses, and Latin dance performances by the Baltimore Salsa Dance Company, everyone is guaranteed to have a great time.

The Real Geniuses' popularity has grown to make them a must-see band in the D.C./Baltimore region. Their set list contains lots of hits from the 80's, but they are no stranger to songs from the 50's through the 90's. With female and male vocalists and a fun set list, they are sure to get everyone up and dancing!

Along with live music from The Real Geniuses, will be an exotic Latin dance performance from the talented dancers at the Baltimore Salsa Dance Company. Tabitha Darby and Duane Lewis will perform the Meringue and a Salsa dance, and the Bachata will be performed by Isabell Triemer and Leo Vera.

This year's Fest-of-All is sure to entertain you throughout the night, and maybe even get you to finally try that Salsa dance you always wanted to try. Don't miss out!

Eat, Drink & Be Merry at Fest-of-All

The menu and open bar at this year's Fest-of-All is sure to have something for everyone! We are offering an array of appetizers, dinner items, desserts and drinks, from over 20 Federal Hill restaurants!

The dinner menu will include a sampling of everything Federal Hill including: cheesesteaks, chicken, seafood, sushi rolls, pasta, burgers and more! There will also be cupcakes and assorted desserts from Midnite Cupcakes and Scarborough Fair on the dessert table.

1111 Light Street Demolition Begins

Demolition of the former Epstein's Department Store on Light Street is progressing rapidly to make way for construction of the $30 million 1111 Light Street mixed use project. It was determined early in 2010 that the buildings occupying 1105-1117 Light Street and all of Weber Street had to be replaced because of major defects in existing structures. Much of the work was done brick by brick to avoid damage to adjacent buildings. The last portions of the facades along Light St. came down on Feb. 12 (see photo).

The new project will feature 6,000 square feet of retail space on Light Street and 22,000 square feet of office space on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, which will allow for many business development opportunities for Federal Hill. In addition to retail and office space, the complex will contain 93 luxury apartments. A parking garage, a roof deck offering views of the harbor and city, and a courtyard are just a few of the perks 1111 Light Street will have to offer.

As all parts of the project come together, there is a goal of 13 months for completion. Watch for marketing-related updates on the project’s web site.

Federal Hill Main Street Votes Are In!

Federal Hill Main Street members voted in some new and familiar faces during the February 8th annual meeting. According to the by-laws, the 11-member Board includes three business directors, two resident directors, two at-large seats, and four committee chairs.

The four committee chairs are: Mike Schollaert (Business Development Committee), Mike Burton (Design Committee), Cathy Hammond (Organization Committee), and new to the board, Erin Hopkins (Promotions Committee).

Business Directors include: Dave Rather, Corey Robey and new to the team, Sonny Morstein, former president of the Federal Hill Business Association. Resident Directors include: Patrick Mutch and Cathy Strodel and At-Large Directors include: Christine Cochrum and Bill Romani.

Following the Board election was the voting of officers by the new Board members. Serving as officers are Patrick Mutch, President; Bill Romani, Vice President; Cathy Hammond, Secretary; and Corey Robey, Treasurer.

"I'm delighted to be part of Federal Hill Main Street," said Cathy Hammond. I moved to the peninsula 6 years ago because of the vibrant commercial district, the wonderful neighborhoods and the friendly people. I believe a truly great neighborhood needs all three parts to succeed, and Federal Hill Main Street is the organization that works to strengthen each of those components."

In conjunction with the election and annual meeting was a Volunteer Appreciation Party, a chance for Federal Hill Main Street to thank the hundreds of folks how volunteer their time in support of the program and special events, such as the street festivals.

'The Real Geniuses' To Rock Fest-of-All

We’re all gearing up for this year’s Fest-of-All, which is shaping up to be the best yet! Of course we’ve got hot auction items, ranging from vacations to dining deals; the ever popular Fashion Show; tons of great food and drink; a live Latin dance performance; and a new headlining band: The Real Geniuses!

Formed in August 2000, The Real Geniuses are a great cover band. Their popularity grew and within months they were playing all over the Baltimore/DC area. The band focuses mostly on 80s new wave/party songs, but they can play anything from the 50s to the early 90s, which makes them versatile enough to get anybody up and dancing!

With male and female vocalists, there isn’t a song that these guys - and gal - can’t pull off. Check out their set list and more on their website.

Federal Hill Cookbook Featured in The Guide

Federal Hill Cooks! has become quite a hit. The book features all-star recipes from Federal Hill residents, business owners, and restaurant chefs. Categories include appetizers, salads, soups & sandwiches, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts. Almost as sensational as the flavors are the anecdotes that accompany each recipe. They give a little bit of history and perspective on the recipe, passing along what makes them so dear to each author.

A labor of love of the volunteer Federal Hill Main Street cookcook committee, Federal Hill Cooks! was noticed by Baltimore Guide editor Jacqueline Watts, who was inspired by the stories, particularly that of Grandmom Iafolla’s Meatballs and Spaghetti Sauce.

Seasoned Chef Opens Breakfast & Barbecue

Orlando Morozov has been jet-setting all over the world: South Africa, Spain, Denmark, and more. He returned to the U.S. about 4 years ago and recently opened his first stateside O’s Breakfast and Barbecue in Cross Street Market.

The food at O’s will keep you coming back, whether for old favorites or to try a new and unique dish. Breakfast & Barbecue might sound like an odd combination, but while O’s headlines their breakfast, they do everything from salmon burgers and Caribbean jerk to pancakes, and even offer delivery and catering.

Orlando got involved in the restaurant business while living in Copenhagen. Sick of not being able to get good breakfast, he decided to open his own place. A big breakfast isn’t typical for the Danes; they usually stick to healthy breads and light fare. However, local skeptics turned to patrons, and Orlando opened up five more Copenhagen O’s Breakfast & Barbecues, and another in Stockholm, Sweden.

More than 100 people worked for Orlando, including 30 cooks who shared their tricks and helped him perfect his recipes, including a legitimately French toast, with the real-deal recipe provided by a French friend. The secret ingredient is so top secret that even his wife and coworker, Aleks, couldn’t tell you how to make it!

Orlando and Aleks, a native of Russia, feel the open environment of the Market is perfect for his “test-drive” of O’s. Orlando is confident that neighborhood word-of-mouth from his wifi-equipped Market stall will get the name out.
